What Does Naive Mean?

I have a nephew, he'll be 4 in a few months and I talk to him as if he were an adult. My father did that with me and I knew what patriarchal, idiosyncrasy and nonchalant mean before I could write. As soon as I learned how to read, my favorite book became the dictionary of foreign words - no wonder. Being fairly articulate has worked to my advantage so I want that for my nephew too.
Some time ago, I was babysitting him and while playing I used the word "naive". He looked at me with those say-what eyes and asked:
      "What does naive mean?"
"That you believe something that can't be true."
The confusion in his eyes didn't go away, but I knew it wouldn't - you can't give a 4-year-old a dictionary definition and think you're off the hook, you have to give examples. So I thought about it and came up with these:
When you find your first grey hair and you pluck it, thinking that it won't come back with a vengeance  (and company). That's naive.
When you smell your sweaty armpits in the middle of the day thinking that nobody else will notice. That's naive.
When your boyfriend gets hammered at your girlfriends house and they end up sleeping in the same bed because he "felt awkward sleeping alone in someone else's house" and you believe him. That's naive.
When you pour yourself a glass of milk, which turns out to be sour, and you think: "Maybe not all of it is spoiled." That's naive.
When you're driving in your car and you see a wall of hail falling  a few meters ahead of you and you think: "Maybe any of it won't hit my car." That's naive.
When you're swimming in the sea and you see a shark coming at you and you think: "Maybe he's just coming to say hello." That's naive.
Of course I didn't tell him that, that wouldn't solve the problem, I'd just had more explaining to do. So I looked at his big, curious eyes and said:
"Do you think you've been a good boy and you deserve another cookie?"
      "Yes."
      "That's naive."

  2. Dude, best list of naive ever. (The poor little guy though, he thought he was getting a cookie!) I do think it's really important to talk to little kids and not just baby talk them, they're so smart and pick up on stuff so fast that it's really uncool to talk down to them. (The craziest conversations I've ever had are with my kids and with how weird some of my friends are, that's saying alot!)

And wow, that skirt and the long hoodie together is just all kinds of awesome. (And that looks like such a comfortable hoodie, like walking around wrapped up in a sunggie but not as cult leader-ish looking.)
