Why Do Dogs Lick - the Real Reasons

I while ago, I wrote about stuff I don't get about dogs and one of the things was why do they lick. I promised to have a heart to heart with my Mr. Fartz to see what's behind all off the frigging licking and I did. Well, it wasn't so much of a heart-to-heart as it was a tongue-to-foot but I've got some answers. So why do dogs lick?
  1. Licking is a dog code for: "You need a shower, dude." It's their way of helping your social life. And when your dog thinks your hygiene is questionable... There's your reason why your social life isn't as cheery as you'd like.
  2. Obsessive licking can possibly lead to the fact that you haven't fed them for the past 3 days so your dog's trying to tell you that he/she's hungry. But you've obviously trained him/her well enough not to eat you, so he/she's just licking. For now.
  3. It's a form of punishment. You took their toy away, bathed them, haven't walk them often enough, didn't give them your leftovers or something along those lines so they hate you and they want you to smell as bad as their breath.
  4. They were maniac sex offenders in their previous lives and old habits do die hard. And sometimes never.
  5. Because they want to get inside your head but they took the idiom literally so they're licking where they can to accomplish their mission. And truth be told, you never do let them lick your face!
You might think this list is bonkers, you might disagree with some of the points but that's what my dog said. And in case you are wondering why my dog is licking me, I can assure you that it's none of the reasons listed above (ok, maybe a bit of number 3 or 1, but I'm not sure). My doggy said that he's licking me because he likes me - that's the way dogs hug. But why do I think dogs lick? Because you let them. As simple as that. Dogs lick because you let them, you perv.

Don't forget to follow via Twitter and/or share if you have a dog, would like to have a dog, like dogs, don't mind dogs or would just like dogs to leave you alone. There are new posts coming up every Monday, Wednesday and Friday so I hope you'll be back this Wednesday. Whether you decide to pop by again or not, enjoy the rest of your week!

  1. Hahaha It seems like my dog is licking my feed or leg alllll day. It drives me nuts. The worst is when I put lotion on. I swear its like cat nip for dogs or something. Grossness.

  6. I don't like dogs - I'm not scared of them, they just make me feel unclean and I've never even been licked (well not by a dog) so I'm not sure where my dislike to them comes from. I rarely say a dog is cute, but your dog's tongue looks very clean - cleaner than many human tongues let me tell you!

I'm glad you agree about not letting a dog lick your face because I see so many people allow their dogs to do this. Have you seen how Coco lets Spatacus licks her face and mouth - yuk!

  8. Haha, this cracked me up! Yeah, it's probably because he loves you, but that doesn't rule out that he was a sex offender in a past life ;) And love that your dog's name is Mr. Fartz!

  9. Hahaha in my case a dog would lick my hand, I would put this hand to my face shortly after and then die of an allergy shock ;)

I have no idea about dogs, but my suggestion would be they lick you because they like the salty taste of sweat that's on our skin?!

  11. Your dog clearly has a serious knee fetish. I think it's a riot that you named him Mr. Fartz! I think licking is a dog's way of kissing but the other five reasons seem highly plausible as well. I think reason number four would explain a couple of other doggy behaviors I've encountered from time to time.

  12. This post made me LAUGH OUT LOUD!

I'm a little scared of dogs. If I see one walking towards me, I cross the road, HA!

I do have a cat though and she licks me quite a lot! I see it as her grooming me, LOL. But it is annoying!

  20. Whatever the reason dogs lick, I always find it really cute for the first hour or so... and then I'm ready to give them back to their own :) I'm the ideal dog babysitter, but would make the world's worst pet owner! Your dog is pretty adorable, I must admit.

  25. Mr Fartz's so cute <3 And lol, I am sure it's #3! Should've known all along! Great discovery for mankind, Peet heaueaeuhaeuhea! It's cute when they lick you but when big dogs drool orz, they sure can drool QQ You think it's the residue from their past life?? JK, nasty thought lol

But dogs are real cutie, unlike evil world dominating cats QQ But I have no qualms for the two of them, equivalently cute <3
