Nothing Is Ever Just Black or White

I had some free time recently so I was finally able to finish the book I mentioned here. Among many others, the author also talks about a Japanese Buddhist story, which I can't get out of my mind for some reason, and now seems to be the perfect opportunity for me to shove this story down your throats even if you're a Christian, a Muslim, a Jew, an atheist or if you prefer pizza.
Once upon a time, two Buddhist monks were making a pilgrimage and reached a river. Waters were rough and high making it hard to cross the roaring river. There on the river bank, a young girl was sitting desperate for some assistance and as soon as she saw the two monks, she jumped up and asked:
"Could you, please, help me across the river? I can't cross it myself."
"I cannot help you, woman," said the young monk. "Don't you see I'm a monk? I took a vow, I cannot touch a female body."
While the young one was talking, the old one picked up the girl without saying a word, carried her across the river, put her down on the other bank and walked on.
Several hours later, the young monk couldn't hold his tongue any longer so he said to the older one:
"Aren't we monks? How could you carry that woman?"
And the old monk replied: "I put her down on that river bank hours ago. How come you're still carrying her?"
The way I see it, the message of this story, be it real or not, is that the world isn't just black or white. It's also blue and orange. And fuchsia and grey and green and all the colors in between. But no matter the color, you can't bother to bottle every hardship, every struggle, not even those victorious moments, which make your heart sing, because as soon as they happen, they're already gone. At one point, you just have to let go.

  14. Thank you for stopping by and leaving me a comment, your short story has a great point, I usually care too much for things that happen to me and for too long, usually I hurt more than I really have too, so this is like a bucket of water over my head! In a good way! :)

  23. Very thought provoking - Unfortunately I'm seeing more black and white in the world/my life at the moment and I do need to open my eyes a bit more to the other 'colours'

Anyway that outfit!! the one with the yellow skirt and bow was my favourite, but this one has topped it - those palazzos are stunning and the colour really suits you.

Promise me you wont get on that roof again, it looks kinda high!

  38. Cool story! I did a lot of soul searching in my twenties and thirties, and I eventually found something that really suited me, that really made me wash away all those questions and black and white: my twin little girls. I know it's the biggest cliché in the world, but there's a big rainbow in my head thanks to them, they healed me in many ways. It doesn't mean I don't get sad or depressed or angry, but kids bring a huge amount of happiness and make you stronger.
And on top of that, you just stop thinking because you're too bloody knackered!
