Life Is Not Fair - Get Used to It

I've already mentioned I wanted to do a quotes post on Bill Gates here and now I'm keeping my word. So to kick things off, I first have a question: What do Abraham Lincoln (the 16th president of the United States who abolished slavery), Walt Disney (if you don't know who he is, then you probably need a hug and a childhood), Mark Zuckerberg (the founder of Facebook), Henry Ford (the founder of the Ford Motor company), Thomas Edison (the light bulb and motion picture camera inventor), Steve Jobs (a co-founder of Apple) and Bill Gates (the founder of Microsoft) have in common? Huh, what? Think, damn it.
If you're like me then your first thought was: A penis? Although that's probably a safe assumption, there's another common denominator to the bunch - none of these men has a college degree. Even though I have a degree, I find this fact highly reassuring since one of the most successful (and thus rich (or is it the other way around? (or are the two notions not connected at all?))) person on the planet actually didn't finish his studies. Gates did in fact enroll in Harvard, but eventually dropped out which in his case paid off BIG TIME - he became a billionaire at the age of 31. Thirty-one, people!! He's sure come a long way since selling his first program at 17, dropping out of Harvard at 20 and getting arrested for running a red light and driving without a driver's license at 22 - his parents had to be so proud.
But as I've said, things have ended well (that's an understatement) for Gates - undoubtedly due to his genius and diligence - because in 2005 Queen Elizabeth II awarded him a knight, in 2007 Harvard finally gave in and awarded him a honorary degree and he is said to donate over one billion dollars to various charities and good causes - so far. (In your face, Mother Teresa!) But enough about Bill Gates trivia, let's hear from the man himself - here's a selection of my favorite Gates quotes.

  • Thinking about your potential mortality isn't very productive.
  • Success is a lousy teacher. It seduced smart people into thinking they can't lose.
  • Intellectual property has the shelf life of a banana.
  • If you can't make it good, at least make it look good.
  • Life is not fair - get used to it.
  • If I'd had some set idea of a finish line, don't you think I would have crossed it years ago?
  • Capitalism has worked very well. Anyone who wants to move to North Korea is welcome.
  • Expectations are a form of first-class truth: If people believe it, it's true.
  • Whether it's Google or Apple or free software, we've got some fantastic competitors and it keeps us on our toes.
  • Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off.
  • Private money can take risks in a way that government money often isn't willing to.
  • I'm a geek.
  • Like almost everyone who uses e-mail, I receive a ton of spam every day. Much of it offers to help me get out of debt or get rich quick.
  • Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
  • Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were.
  • Don't compare yourself with anyone in this world ... if you do so, you're insulting yourself.
  • I failed in some subjects in exam, but my friend passed in all. Now he's an engineer in Microsoft and I'm the owner of Microsoft.
  • I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.
  • Many people overestimate what they can do in 1 year and underestimate what they can do in 10 years.
  • I have 100 billion dollars. You realize I could spend 3 million dollars a day every day for the next 100 years? And that's if I don't make another dime.
  • Patience is a key element of success.

  2. "I have 100 billion dollars. You realize I could spend 3 million dollars a day every day for the next 100 years? And that's if I don't make another dime" OMG, you just cannot comprehend it can you. This is how I know I am never going to be rich: I got top grades at school; I got a first class at uni; I'm not lazy. It appears to be high school drop-outs or rags to riches people who make the most money. Where did it all go wrong for me. I think it's when my mum smacked me for coming home with a poor grade in junior school.

Nah, I'm being flippant, hats off to these guys - I'd love to work for them, even more so than working for myself, unless I was earning millions of course! Have a good weekend.

  5. I do not know why but i never like bill gates a lot. And it's weird because i don't know anything about him (except the obvious stuff).
I find he's typical cocky that tells you he's rich and you don't just because you're stupid. This is reflected in some of the quotes.

However, there're some that I like.
"Before you were born, your parents weren Peak Gust are as boring now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk acerca how cool you thought you were." It's fucking true.
"Do not compare yourself with anyone in this world ... if you do so, you're insulting yourself" gives you a big injection of ego.
"I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it" It's something I had never thought of, but obviously it is very logical hahaha

Love your necklace and edition =)

    1. You don't like him??? Why?! He's so kooky, I love him.:) And I don't think he's full of himself, he's just letting people know you don't have to get the best grades and be at the top all the time to get to where you want to be. At least that's how I see him... Maybe I'm wrong, although I hope I'm not...

  16. Seriosuly, $3 million a day :o ...can anyone spend that much in a day? Impressive facts and even more inspiring quotes, he truly is a genius, not only in the intellectual sense, but business and life sense too. I think what I appreciate most is that Bill generously gives of his wealth to charity and I wish more of these billionaires would be encouraged to do so. I am loving this forest green shade right now, great sweeter and the jeans are terrific. Happy Holidays sweety!

  18. Interestingly enough, the brightest people I've met are those without degrees--so that doesn't make me one of them. Plus they're also streetsmart. Life is indeed not fair and it took tumbles and turns in my life for me to accept that. I guess I'm more happy after that. Happy Christmas Peet, and have a lovely week x
