Yesterday's Weirdness Is Tomorrow's Reason Why

For Peet's Sake blog Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas bat country Hunter S. Thompson

I'm pretty jealous of Johnny Depp mostly for two (in my opinion obvious) reasons. A) Every night, he gets to go to bed with Johnny Depp. And B) He was a friend, a wingman, a pen pal, a co-party-goer of Hunter S. Thompson. Who is Hunter S. Thompson? That's exactly what I asked my mom yesterday, I said: "Mom, do you know who Hunter S. Thompson is?" and after a moment of careful consideration, she replied:
"Nope. Never met the man. But I presume he's a hunter of some sort?"
      "Nope."
      "Does he sing?"
"Well, I'm sure he sang at some point..."
But no, he was not a singer in the true (and thus the MTV/Auto-Tune) sense of the word. His job description, larger than life persona and crazier than imaginable life are impossible to sum up in just a couple of sentences, but Fear and Loathing fans don't need me to go into details, right? I'll just say this: he was an incredible journalist and writer who raised hell on multiple continents by writing about Hell's Angels, bestiality, drugging, drinking, sexing, pornography and - since that's where his career took off - sports. And of course not just writing about these things, but living them too. Sounds insane? Naaah, he wasn't insane, he was just crazy. And yes, there's a difference.
Not just his life, his death was - in my opinion - a piece of crazy art as well. In 2005, he committed a suicide at 67 by sending a bullet through his head. His family says that it wasn't a desperate act but a premeditated one because he was suffering from many painful health issues. One of his friends later said: "He told me 25 years ago that he would feel real trapped if he didn't know that he could commit suicide at any moment." In a way, he took matters into his own hands when he was still able too.
Later, a piece of writing surfaced which was dubbed his suicide note and it said: "No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun - for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your (old) age. Relax - This won't hurt."
But the outlandishly remarkable story of Hunter S. Thompson doesn't end there. After his death, his body was cremated and the ashes were fired from a cannon, while fireworks were blasting away in the background to the sounds of Spirit In the Sky and Mr. Tambourine Man. Talk about a funeral. And undoubtedly, his spirit does in fact live on - not only in the sky but in his works too. You really should have a taste. Go ahead, pick up a book. But since I know a whole lot of you won't, here's a list of some of his quotes.

  • 'Crazy' is the term of art, 'insane' is the term of law. Remember that and you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
  • Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"
  • A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.
  • I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
  • Yesterday's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why.
  • We are all alone, born alone, die alone and - in spite of True Romance magazines - me shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely - at least not all the time - but essentially and finally alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.
  • Who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?
  • Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously.
  • The edge. There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

For Peet's Sake blog Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas quote Hunter S. Thompson

  • When the going gets weird, the weird turn professional.
  • What do you say, for instance, about a generation that has been taught that rain is poison and sex is death? If making love might be fatal and if a cool spring breeze on any summer afternoon can turn a crystal blue lake into a puddle of black poison right in front of your eyes, there is not much left except TV and relentless masturbation. It's a strange world. Some people get rich and others eat shit and die.
  • It never got weird enough for me.
  • Let the good times roll.
  • Too weird to live, too rare to die!
  • If you're going to be crazy, you have to get paid for it or else you're going to be locked up.
  • I was not proud of what I had learned but I never doubted that it was worth knowing.
  • Good people drink good beer.
  • Freedom is something that dies unless it's used.
  • Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.

For Peet's Sake blog Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas quote Hunter S. Thompson

  • Some people will tell you that slow is good - but I'm here to tell you that fast is better. I've always believed this, in spite of the trouble it's caused me. Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. That is why God made fast motorcycles.
  • I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.
  • You better take care of me, Lord, if you don't, you're gonna have me on your hands.
  • I learned a long time ago that reality was much weirder than anyone's imagination.
  • All the blood is drained out of democracy - it dies - when only half the population votes.
  • Mortality is temporary, wisdom is permanent.
  • He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master.
  • I knew a Buddhist once, and I've hated myself ever since.
  • If Sunday is the Lord's day, then Saturday belongs to the Devil. It is the only night of the week when he gives out free passes to the late show at the Too Much Fun Club.
  • I'm a word freak. I like words. I've always compared writing to music. That's the way I feel about good paragraphs. When it really works, it's like music.
  • If I'd written all the truth I knew for the past ten years, about 600 people - including me - would be rotting in prison cells from Rio to Seattle today. Absolute truth is a very rare and dangerous commodity in the context of professional journalism.

  1. Oh my goodness, look at you Miss Creative.

Nope, can't say i had ever heard of him either, but sounds like an intelligent man. Some thought-provoking quotes, although quite deep. This one resonated with me: "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously"

Have a fab weekend hun x

  2. Hi Peet! I never heard from him, but after reading your post I think he was - although not really commerical - couraged and clever. And the quotes you mention, e. g. "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." might have been obviously really true for him. I´m also impressed that he had the consequence to end his life by suicide ...

    1. That's what I like about him, his honesty. Even though he said that he wasn't actually 100 % honest because the world wouldn't be able to handle the absolute truth.:)

  11. Morning Peet! I didnt know him either but seems it was a very smart person. How sad he killed himself and what a funeral..but being a writer is like he never die. His quotes are good and sincere, now I got the reason of the title of the post :) My fav is this: "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously", so true as for everything. You are an artist too, the last image made me so smile!!! Happy Monday dear, hope you had a lovely weekend! xo

  12. That is possibly the best suicide note ever. I know that there isn't a suicide note competition, but that one is pretty rad.

  15. Hi Peet, the photo edits are so cool, you are truly creative! It was so intriguing reading about Hunter, I am going to google him right after this. What a full crazy life and what a way to sign out. I still can't get past the suicide note, its shocking, and clearly not done out of severe depression. His interesting and obscure quotes define who he was as person and what he stood for. I gather he was incredibly intelligent, slightly off centre, fun-loving and a little deranged. Its people like that who are bold enough today things no else is brave enough to. Have a great week ahead doll!

  17. I 'm jealous of Johnny Depp for one more, and that is that he had sex with Kate Moss. Just for that , I 'm at his feet .

I had no idea who this guy was. But his words are really awesome. What he wrote in the suicide note? You have to be too crazy or too sane to think like that and act accordingly.

Quotes are so inspiring. I love this ones:
"A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance"
"Freedom is something that dies unless it's used"
What he sais about music and fuel, that can make your car run fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud =)
I laughed a lot with this: "I knew a Buddhist once, and I've hated myself ever since"

    Great post Peet!
