This Is Not a Retreat

I've written somewhat of a history lesson once before (or was it twice?), but I'm going to do that again because I've found another interesting history nugget that I'd like to share with you. And this really is a nugget because it's Friday and my mind is already elsewhere. But before it inescapably melts, spills and bubbles out of control, I have to keep it together for at least these next few short sentences. And here they are.
Do you know who Oliver P. Smith is? Well, do you? . . . No, you don't. But don't worry, I wouldn't have known who he was either if he hadn't said something pretty clever for me to stumble upon many many years later after he had said it. So what did he say? I'll tell you — in a minute. First we need some background: Oliver P. Smith was a General, who served in the US Marine Corps. He was a World War II veteran and he also fought in the Korean War and the latter is what's important for this here post.
The Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953 and was fought between the Republic of Korea (the south) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (the north) but this is still not that relevant, I just like to torture you with history facts from time to time. What is relevant is one of the initial battles called the Battle of Chosin fought in 1950 which lasted for merciless 17 days where our guy, Oliver P. Smith, fought for the good guys (the south). The bad guys managed to surround and outnumber the good guys, but still the good guys broke free somehow. But before they did that, General Smith said the following:

"Retreat, hell!

We're not retreating,

we're just advancing in a different direction!"

.

Get it? I really hope you do, because I'm not in the mood to explain this further — my brain is well beyond the initial liquefying stage. But still. Rihanna has a similar tattoo on her which in a much simpler, more straight forward (and thus less cool, duh) way says: Never a failure, always a lesson. And that's how you should look at everything you do in life. You're not making mistakes, you're gaining experience. You're not retreating, you're simply making progress in a new direction.
And now I'm going to make a swift advance towards my fridge — overflowing brain calls for a beer. Happy Friday everybody!

Don't forget to share and follow FPS via Twitter, Bloglovin and/or Google+ to get the latest updates. But most importantly, do come by again sometimes — posting days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so hopefully see you then!

  1. So true, so true and I have to remember this more often. In fact this post came at just the right time to get my positive head on for he weekend. I love the fact that you do all this research for us and then it benefits us too! I like Mr Smith's and Rihanna's way of stating essentially the same thing, I just need to remember it more often!

    1. I've been grasping for some positive straws too lately, so I feel ya ... We just both have to remember this and use it when situation calls for a little pick me up.

  2. Yup, exactly! It's like with the arrow who is only pulled back because it will be shot forwards. I like this metaphor, I'm planning to get an arrow tattoo actually.
And as a philosophy student I - of course - love how all this is always philosophy :)

    1. That's a great metaphor!! And a cool idea for a tattoo. Just don't have it piercing any hearts.:D Or have it, whatever floats your boat, who am I to say...:)

  3. Here's to creative thinking and positive attitudes! I love all the pretty and colourful fashions you managed to style together all at once thus creating simultaneous fashion haul reviews and outfit ensembles whilst still having your gorgeous right eye visible and not disturbing your well organised wardrobe. Genius! Cheers to multidirectional and even multidimensional explorations.. I'll abbreviate this before someone suspects I'm Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise or that I've become Time Warped (shades of Rocky Horror). Have a wonderful weekend!

  6. Of course Rihanna's tattoo is obviously less cool. Duh. :) She has a bit too many tattoos I think. They're too cluttered so you can't really pay attention to a specific one.

Anyways, you closet seems pretty darn full!

    1. It's still pretty cool because of the meaning and that it is on her, but I still prefer this quote.:) And I like all of her tattoos, especially the hand-poked one she has on her hand, that's badass.

  10. I think it's a pretty great way to look at things and I've been giving my best to actually follow that philosophy. sometimes it's easy, sometimes pretty impossible but at least I can say I believe in it. and one of the most pointless emotions is regret. it doesn't do any good so why bother feeling it? that's another philosophy I like. by the way, those photos are the coolest and now I'm so curious to see the whole wardrobe, haha. just can't help myself!
